Car enthusiasts from around western North America will be setting up shop at Olds College from June 28 to July 1 as part of the 52nd annual International Antique Auto Meet.
A total of 235 participants from car clubs in Montana, Washington, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan will be going on various tours throughout Central Alberta during the four days. Participants can choose tours of Weidner automotive collection in Lacombe, the Gilmour auto collection south of Red Deer, the Wildlife Discovery Park in Innisfail or the PaSu Sheep Farm southwest of Carstairs.
People will be driving vehicles such as a 1913 Overland, plus a few vehicles from the 1920s to 1940s and later. When the cars aren't travelling to the tour sites, they will be parked at the Olds High School parking lot. A show and shine will also be held on June 28 at the OHS parking lot from 6 to 8 p.m. The show and shine is free and open to the public.
There are 10 auto clubs in the participating provinces and states that host an event each year. Malcolm Fischer, the co-chair of the event, said Olds was chosen to host this year.
“Of course it became evident that it was at the same time as the 100th birthday of the college, so it all fit together pretty nicely,” he said.
Fischer said in 1967, friends from various car clubs came together to share their enthusiasm for cars and the rotation of the meet began.
The event was previously held in Central Alberta in 2003 in Stettler. Last year, the event was held in Kalispell, Mont. and in Spokane, Wash. in 2010.
