Town council was to consider a plan on April 22 to create a new road through the former Olds High School site at 51 Avenue later this summer.
The plan is a partnership between the town, a proposed developer for the site and Chinook's Edge School Division, which currently still owns that land.
The town is being given the land by CESD to build the road and the developer will be paying $400,000 to help upgrade the intersection with Highway 27. Building the road is part of a larger municipal improvement plan, not to exceed $3 million this year.
“Instead of paying for the land, we're going to build the road. This is right through the gut of the old high school land,” said Norm McInnis, the town's chief administrative officer.
The town wants to take some of the pressure off the intersection of 50 Avenue and Highway 27 and also give another entrance to the uptown core.
“When we closed off 52 Avenue, really now 50th is the only access into the uptown core from Highway 27, so this will actually create another entrance into the uptown and really improve the flow of traffic. It will also give access to the old football fields on the north side of Highway 27, so when they are developed it will (provide) access there as well,” he said.
