OLDS — It’s unclear why motor vehicle collisions in Olds doubled from last fall compared to fall of 2021, town councillors were told during a meeting last week.
Crime stats presented by Olds RCMP commanding officer Staff Sgt. Warren Wright showed that the total number of vehicle collisions in Olds during the RCMP’s third quarter (Oct. 1-Dec. 31) rose from 35 during that period in 2020 to 70 during that same stretch in 2021.
Coun. Heather Ryan asked why.
“I’m just wondering, is there a specific location in town where there’s a problem or is it just a weird occurrence,” Ryan asked.
Wright said he wasn’t sure. He couldn’t say whether a specific intersection or stretch of road was to blame.
Protective services director Justin Andrew said he too was at a loss to explain the increase.
Andrew said to his knowledge, intersections in Olds are “managed quite well and we don’t have any specific problems, per se.”
He did say though that due to insurance regulations, even relatively minor collisions have to be reported, including fender-benders in parking lots.
