An Olds College student in his 20s was struck and killed by a northbound train early on the morning of April 23 at the rail crossing on 50 Street in downtown Olds.
Cpl. Jay Peden, an Olds RCMP spokesman, said the collision took place at about 3:40 a.m. and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
He added police are still investigating the incident and at this time, there are indications the safety equipment and signals at the crossing were operational at the time of the collision.
There were no witnesses to the collision, Peden said, and police are now assisting the medical examiner’s investigation into the incident.
No criminal charges are being considered at this time.
Peden said the train’s engineer was able to stop the train following the collision using an emergency brake.
Dean Turnquist, an Olds College spokesman, confirmed the man killed was Cody Ghostkeeper, a second-year arboriculture student from Pritchard, B.C., a community roughly 40 kilometres east of Kamloops.
Turnquist said Ghostkeeper worked at the Crossing, a campus restaurant and pub.
He also said the college is providing counselling services for students and staff.
According to his Facebook page, Ghostkeeper also attended Okanagan College for landscape construction and design and Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops for horticulture.
