OLDS — The Town of Olds council voted to proclaim March 8 as International Women’s Day in the community.
Councillors made that decision during their Feb. 28 meeting.
A report to council noted that day was first observed in 1911 in Europe.
“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards achieving gender equality and celebrate the acts of courage and determination by individuals who have played an extraordinary role in advancing gender equality in their communities,” the report said.
The Town of Sundre council also proclaimed March 8 International Women's Day in Sundre.
This year's theme is #BreakTheBias.
"Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias. Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality," states the International Women's Day website.
