Members of the Olds Fire Department battle a blaze that erupted out of the back of Paint Pot on 50th Street in Olds Saturday night around 8:30 p.m. Business owner Brad Johnson suspects a cord may have sparked the fire.

A fire erupted inside Paint Pot on 50th Street in Olds last Saturday evening at around 8:30 p.m. while the store was closed for business.

Paint Pot owner Brad Johnson said people at neighbouring stores and people passing by were the first to notice the blaze Dec. 1 and called 911 as well as himself.

“It seems to be an electrical cord that started the fire,” said Johnson.

He said the fire first sparked in the shed attached to the back of the store and began to spread inside the store when members of the Olds Fire Department arrived.

He said it took them about three and a half hours to put an end to the hungry flames.

“They were here probably until 11:30 p.m. and I first got the call at 8:30 p.m.”

He said fire department members tore out parts of the ceiling and insulation to check for hot spots.

“The fire department did a wonderful job with containing the fire.”

A number of fire fighting trucks and equipment were used to bring the fire under control including the department's ladder truck.

The Paint Pot was open for business Monday.

“There is little damage on the inside – it's minimal,” said Johnson.
