The Town of Olds will be spending up to $3,009,196 on street improvement projects in 2013 after council passed a motion on April 22 to allow for the work to take place later this year.

The work includes $450,000 for extending 51 Avenue through the former Chinook's Edge School Division site north to Highway 27, subject to Alberta Transportation and CESD approval.

A total of $738,831 will be spent on other road projects throughout the community, as well as $250,000 for traffic lights at Highway 2A and 57 Street and a $250,000 contribution toward widening 57 Avenue.

The work on 51 Avenue will also support work the town plans to undertake in 2014 replacing water and wastewater pipes in the uptown core.

Larry Wright, the town's operations director said preliminary planning on that work will be taking place this year, with the goal to perform the work next year so as not to disrupt a busy season of festivities in town.
