SUNDRE — The lone occupant of a vehicle that crashed yesterday into the rear end of a parked semi tractor trailer east of town sustained serious injuries and was subsequently airlifted by STARS to an undisclosed hospital.

Sgt. Trent Sperlie, the Sundre RCMP detachment’s commander, told the Albertan at 2:47 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 his detachment received a 911 call from the operator of a semi tractor who reported to police that a car had collided into his trailer’s rear end.

The crash occurred along Highway 27 between Sundre and the Westward Ho turnoff, he said, adding that attending the scene were Mounties, the Sundre Fire Department, as well as Emergency Medical Services.

“The lone occupant and driver of the vehicle that hit the back of the semi trailer was found with serious injuries,” Sperlie wrote by email, adding that “STARS airlifted the injured driver to hospital.”

Although the investigation as of earlier today (Friday, May 27) remained ongoing, the sergeant said the preliminary gathering of information “indicates that the tractor trailer was stopped along the eastbound side of Highway 27 while the driver was adjusting a loose tie down on the flat deck trailers when it was rear-ended by the car.”

The sergeant said more information will be provided as the investigation progresses.
