It’s often said that offence wins games, but defence wins championships.

The Olds Grizzlys have beefed up their defence for the future by signing defenceman Brendan McBride. The Sundre-area (Westward Ho) resident is six feet tall and weighs about 185 pounds. He turns 18 next month.

The 2019 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is coming up. It will take place March 9 at Holy Trinity Catholic School.

The Olds Open Bonspiel was another success, Olds Curling Club Jeff Miller says. The tournament, held at the Olds Curling Club March 15-17, featured 24 teams, on par with last year. It attracted teams from Olds and across Central Alberta.

A longtime curler was honoured during the Olds Farmers and Farmerettes bonspiel banquet. The Olds Farmers bonspiel has run for 39 years and the Farmerettes spiel has operated for 36 years.

The Olds Grizzlys may not have had a successful season when it comes to wins and losses, but head coach-GM Joe Murphy says they've built a foundation for a good future with the players they've acquired.

The Olds Farmers and Farmerettes bonspiels do a great job of bringing rural people and town residents together, thereby building a stronger community overall.
