CARSTAIRS - The Plett rink is keeping busy gearing up for provincial playdowns next month.

CARSTAIRS - There was plenty of curling action at the Carstairs rink on the weekend as 20 teams battled it out during the ladies' bonspiel. The bonspiel featured a mix of local ladies' league curlers and visiting out-of-town curlers.

CARSTAIRS - Eight teams took part in the Atom Classic Tournament held on the weekend at the Carstairs Memorial Arena.

Local curlers are back on the ice now that the Southern Alberta Senior Men’s Playdowns are over for another year. The Olds Curling Club hosted the event, which featured 12 rinks, Jan. 18-21.

Local figure skater Kobi Chant,16, will be competing in the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer next month. The Games take place Feb. 15-March 3. Chant will compete on Feb. 25 and 27.

École Deer Meadow School (EDMS) hosted the Chinook's Edge Athletics Association's Middle School Basketball Tournament on the weekend and finished first or second in all four categories.

The Sundre bantam Huskies won their home tournament’s C final. The event, which also doubles as a fundraiser, brought to the Sundre Arena seven visiting teams, which each got to play three games from Friday, Jan. 11 to Sunday, Jan. 13.

Although the Sundre Junior Curling Club’s bonspiel is more about the chance to further develop skills rather than to win titles, the opportunity to play in a more competitive setting really helps the players improve, said the head coach.

INNISFAIL – Kayakers from across the province recently gathered at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre for the Cottonwood Kayak Club’s annual canoe polo tournament. The one-day event took place on Jan. 19.

INNISFAIL – The Innisfail Eagles continue their winning ways. The Birds beat the Lacombe Generals 4-3 in an exciting overtime win on Friday (Jan. 18) at the Innisfail Arena.
